What Is Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder?

OCD is an anxiety disorder characterized by intense obsessions and compulsions that disrupt activities of daily living.

Obsessions

Obsessions are impulses, images, or thoughts that happen over and over again. These feel like they are out of a person’s control and are disturbing for the person.

Someone with obsessive thoughts often realizes that these thoughts don’t make sense, but intensely uncomfortable feelings usually accompany the obsessions. These feelings can include:

  • Fear
  • Disgust
  • Panic
  • Doubt

They also often have an overwhelming feeling that certain things have to be done in a way that is exactly right. These obsessions are time-consuming and extremely repetitive, disrupting a significant part of their day.

Compulsions

The compulsions in obsessive-compulsive disorder are the repetitive thoughts or behaviors a person uses to neutralize or counteract the obsessions. People with OCD realize that their compulsive behaviors are only temporary solutions.

Not all repetitive behaviors are compulsions; the context and function of the behavior make a difference. For example, bedtime routines are repetitive, but they are positive and functional as a part of daily life. However, a compulsion is a repetitive behavior that the person feels forced to do but would rather not have to.

True compulsive behavior is not functional or positive in an individual’s day-to-day life, and it is done to try to escape the obsession.
